What is sinusitis?

Sinuses are spaces located in the bones of the face that are lined with mucous membranes. In every person, there are four types of sinuses that are symmetrically located. Each of them connects to the nasal cavity, so that the secretions produced by them can escape, and air can freely ventilate the interior of the sinuses, not allowing bacteria to grow.

With a sinus infection, swelling and inflammation attack the mucous membrane lining the sinuses, blocking the sinus outlets to the nasal cavity and promoting the accumulation of secretions.

Sinusitis in Poland currently affects 10-15 percent of the general population, or about 4 million people. Research shows that the disease occurs 2 to 3 times a year in adults and 6 to 8 times in children.

What are the symptoms of sinusitis?

The most common symptoms of sinusitis include:

  • watery, mucous, or purulent nasal discharge,
  • difficulty breathing through the nose,
  • blocked nose and smell problems,
  • headache that gets worse when bending down,
  • constant fatigue and low-grade fevers,
  • pain or distension of face,
  • toothache and bad breath in case of maxillary sinusitis,
  • presence of nasal polyps,
  • swelling of the mucous membrane in the nasal passage,
  • constant discharge from the nose into the throat,
  • dry cough attacks.

How to treat sinuses?

Sinus treatment is administered by an ENT doctor, who will select the appropriate treatment for the patient depending on their needs. Today, sinuses are treated with pharmacological agents and surgical treatment.

Pharmacology consists of antibiotic therapy, preferably, targeted, with prior swabbing. Treatment with antibiotics usually lasts four to six weeks and involves giving the patient corticosteroids, as well as a drug to liquefy mucous secretions.

When medications no longer work for sinus infections, and inflammation several times a year causes clogged sinuses to prevent normal functioning, more drastic steps must be taken, and sinus decongestion using invasive techniques is necessary. The reason why antibiotic therapy is ineffective is usually due to the production of a biofilm by the microorganisms that inhabit the sinuses – a protective layer that limits the penetration and action of the antibiotic.

At MML Clinic, we perform many sinus treatments that can help patients deal with this bothersome problem.

What are the sinus treatment methods?

Sinus lavage with the Hydrodebrider method

The Hydrodebrider sinus lavage procedure is a minimally invasive procedure of rotary saline solution lavage of the sinuses, 270 degrees of reach, at a pressure of 5 ml/s, with simultaneous suctioning of the flushed out post-inflammatory lesions. The treatment helps remove the bacterial biofilms that cause recurrent sinusitis. Using this method, it is also possible to deliver the right drugs to them.

Balloon sinuplasty

Balloon sinuplasty, or endoscopic sinus catheterization, is also called ballooning. It is minimally invasive, using miniature, soft and very flexible instruments inserted through the nose to open blocked sinuses. During the procedure, a small catheter with a durable balloon is placed in the mouth of the sinuses. Then, it is filled with pressurized fluid to effectively unclog the sinuses, after which it is flushed out of the lingering secretions. Opening the sinuses allows them to drain and dry, and restore their proper functioning. Due to its high degree of safety, the procedure can be performed on children.

XprESS LOProfile balloon sinuplasty

The most modern technique for sinus surgery today is XprESS LOProfile balloon sinuplasty. This is an upgraded ballooning method that produces more lasting therapeutic results than the classic procedure. With minimal interference, it allows the patient to quickly return to daily activities. The XprEss LoProfile removes significantly less tissue compared to traditional sinus decongestion methods, minimizing bleeding and pain.

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery – FESS

The FESS procedure is performed on patients who suffer from chronic sinusitis and when conservative treatment does not bring the expected results in their case. The main goal of the functional endoscopic sinus surgery is to eliminate lesions and widen the natural sinus outlets. It also allows for the removal of mucosal hyperplasia and small, bony structures located in unfavorable anatomical positions. This method restores proper ventilation and drainage of the sinuses and provides an efficient mechanism for clearing their cavities. This type of sinus surgery is performed under general anesthesia with access through the nasal passages, without incising the facial skin or oral mucosa.

MIST – healthy sinuses with minimal intervention

MIST is the abbreviation for Minimally Invasive Sinus Technique and is a second generation, non-invasive procedure in the nasal and sinus mucosa. When MIST is performed, the most precise instruments are used in conjunction with the latest endoscopic techniques, allowing the procedure to be completed in 40 to 60 minutes and the patient to return to normal function within 3 days.

Polypectomy

Polypectomy, or surgery for nasal polyps, is performed using an endoscopic kit, and involves surgical removal of growths of benign origin from the nasal mucosa, causing nasal patency disorders. The procedure is performed through the nasal cavity, into which a special loop is inserted and the polyp is removed using this loop. The operation takes an average of 30-60 minutes.

CYCLONE sinus wash.

This technique aids surgical treatment by delivering a drug directly to the affected areas, dispersing it into the diseased sinus. At the same time, it allows for very precise suction of the sinuses, which significantly speeds up the healing process. It is an innovative method in the field of sinus cleansing that eliminates 99 percent of the biofilm in the sinuses.
